A Complete Guide to Finnieston, Glasgow

Finnieston's transformation from industrial dockland to Glasgow's coolest neighbourhood is one of the city's great success stories. In the space of a decade, this compact strip along Argyle Street has become Scotland's most exciting food and drink destination, earning it the nickname "Glasgow's foodie strip."

The story of Finnieston is really two stories. On one side, you have the waterfront — home to the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), the OVO Hydro arena, and the iconic Finnieston Crane, a 175-foot cantilever crane that stands as a monument to Glasgow's shipbuilding heritage. The Hydro, designed by Foster + Partners, is one of the world's busiest live entertainment venues, hosting everything from arena tours to UFC events.

On the other side, you have Argyle Street — a stretch of road that has become synonymous with exceptional dining. The Gannet, which serves modern Scottish cuisine using the finest local ingredients, has won multiple awards. Crabshakk, a tiny seafood restaurant, draws queues for its langoustines and oysters. Porter & Rye is the go-to for dry-aged steaks. And The Finnieston, a bar and restaurant in a beautifully converted pub, perfectly captures the area's blend of old and new.

The craft beer scene is equally impressive. Shilling Brewing Co. brews on-site in a converted church, while BrewDog and various independent bars offer an ever-rotating selection of local and international craft beers. For cocktails, Kelvingrove Café and The Ben Nevis (technically just over the border in Argyle Street's Finnieston stretch) are firm favourites.

Finnieston is also home to some excellent independent shops. From record stores to vintage clothing, from artisan bakeries to speciality coffee roasters, the area rewards exploration. The streets running off Argyle Street reveal hidden gems — small galleries, yoga studios, and neighbourhood cafés that give the area its village-within-a-city feel.

The area is well connected by public transport. Exhibition Centre railway station sits right on the waterfront, and Kelvingrove subway station is a short walk away. Multiple bus routes serve Argyle Street, and it's an easy walk from the city centre or the West End.

Finnieston proves that Glasgow's best days are ahead of it — a neighbourhood that honours its industrial past while embracing a creative, culinary future.
