A Complete Guide to Southside, Glasgow

Glasgow's Southside is where the city breathes. While the city centre buzzes and the West End preens, the Southside offers something different — space, greenery, diversity, and a food scene that's rapidly becoming one of Scotland's most exciting.

The Southside is really a collection of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own character. Shawlands, centred around Kilmarnock Road, has emerged as a dining destination in its own right, with restaurants like Tuk Tuk (Indian street food), The Glad Café (music venue and café), and Celentano's drawing food lovers from across the city. Victoria Road in Govanhill is one of Glasgow's most multicultural streets, where you can find authentic South Asian grocers, Middle Eastern bakeries, and some of the best-value food in Scotland.

The green spaces are the Southside's crown jewels. Pollok Country Park, a 360-acre estate, is home to the magnificent Burrell Collection — one of the world's great art collections, housed in a stunning purpose-built gallery that reopened in 2022 after a major refurbishment. The park itself offers woodland walks, Highland cattle, and the beautiful Pollok House. Queen's Park, designed by Joseph Paxton (who also designed London's Crystal Palace), provides panoramic views across the city from its hilltop flagpole.

Linn Park, further south, is Glasgow's second-largest park and feels genuinely wild — with gorges, waterfalls, and ancient woodland. It's a favourite with runners, dog walkers, and families looking for adventure without leaving the city.

The Southside's cultural scene is growing rapidly. The Tramway, a former tram depot, is now one of Scotland's most important contemporary art spaces, hosting exhibitions, performances, and the annual Glasgow International festival events. The Citizens Theatre, currently undergoing a major restoration, has been producing world-class drama since 1945.

The area is well served by public transport. Multiple railway stations (Pollokshields, Shawlands, Crossmyloof, Pollokshaws) connect to Glasgow Central, and numerous bus routes serve the main roads. The M77 motorway provides easy access for drivers.

The Southside represents Glasgow at its most authentic — unpretentious, diverse, green, and full of surprises.
